Rebekah, Women of Genesis

by Orson Scott Card

Actually, I read this series out of order, so I read this novel first. This is my favorite book of the series, which sounds a bit strange to my mother who absolutely adored Sarah. The reasoning for my preference could be because this was the first book I read in the series. Or it could be because I knew so little about Rebekah to begin with. I found her childhood stories engaging, her final introduction to Issac captivating, and the stories about her twins were understandable. I could relate somewhat to this marvelous woman. I almost shed a tear when she fights with her mother and mocks her brother, Laban for shedding tears publicly. I also found the Asheron issues very interesting. I did not know that Essau's wives were Asheron worshippers. By romanticizing a scene where the wives of Essau teach their daughters to have a little orgy, worshipping their dolls, Card is justifying Rebekah's deception. He is trying to explain how wise this woman was, and that her foresight protected those sacred transcripts, which were passed along from one generation to the next. Wonderful book!
