The Work and the Glory

series by Gerald Lund

At first, I did not like these series of books. I did not like the idea that people believed they were reading authentic Church history, but now that I have taken a few Church History courses at BYU, I find that I enjoy these books so much more. Of course, they are not authentic Church History, but the story has  a lot of truth to it.  I was so impressed by his fourth book, which details the immigration of English Saints. My main research topic for a church history class revealed many of the same stories from the book that I remembered reading in various historical journals. I did not like the fifth book,  because there is a crippled girl who gets married, which though I thought it was quite romantic, it was truly unrealistic! This caused me personal grief, as  I cried for days. My mother suggested that I write a letter to Gerald Lund, expressing my disappointment in his unrealistic treatment of a handicapped girl getting married, but I never wrote the letter. I was going through a rough period at that time. I could go on and on about all the different things I learned from these books, not only concerning my own religions beliefs, but about our relationship with other religions. I could tell you about all of the inspirational epiphanies  I had concerning my life while reading these books, but there are some things which are just too personal, and too sacred to mention. All I can say is that it is quite a remarkable books! :-)
