Tribute
to Doris Day"I like joy; I want to be joyous; I want to have fun on the set; Anne I want to wear beautiful clothes and look pretty. I want to smile and I want to make people laugh. And that's all I want. I like it. I like being happy. I want to make others happy."
Born Doris Mary Ann Von Kapplehoff in Cincinnati, Ohio to a troubled family was America's sweetheart. Unfortunately, her parents divorced early in her younger years. She lived with her mother. As a little girl, Doris loved to dance. Eventually, she wanted to become a ballerina, but when she was 14 years old, tragedy struck in the form of a terrible car accident. Doris thought her dreams were crushed, but soon afterward she discovered that she could sing well. She recollects that the greatest years of her life came as she went on tour with a local band, Les Brown's orchestra. :-)
I suspect that Doris's best years came even later at the birth of her only
child, Terry. While on tour she met her first husband.
They
were married for two years, but shortly after the birth of their son, she
left because he was prone to violence. Her second husband lasted only for
a brief time. Her agent introduced her to the world of movie making, by convincing
her to take a screen test for Warner Brothers, and history began. As you can
see from the list below, Doris plays in a myriad ofl movies, spanning all
different genres from musicals to dramas. She developed excellent relationships
with her fellow movie makers, earning nicknames like "Clara Bixby and
Eunice" from fellow actors. Besides her humorous nature, she was also
legendary for her firm integrity. She had a " swear jar", and any
use of profanity must result in a 25 cent donation. She would not appear in
films that used foul language nor would she record anything for an album using
profanity.
During
her lifetime, Doris Kapplehoff was married four times. Certain marriages were
quite brief and ended badly. Her third marriage ended in disaster when her
husband, squandered every cent she ever produced making movies. In the end,
she received her money back in an historic lawsuit, which granted Kapplehoff
$22 million. Her third husband was also responsible for contracting his wife
into making several unwanted movies and the famous Doris Day Show. Her married
life was not all peaches and cream! :-)
Married four times, yet only producing one son, who was adopted by her third husband. Doris lives in Carmel, California where she devotes her life to advocating the protection of household animals from physical abuse as the founder of the Doris Day Animal League and the Doris Day Pet Foundation. She is also a devoted mother to her son (business partner).
I invite you to explore this page, dedicated to Doris Day, and appreciate the talent and energy she has brought to the magical world of movies!
