It Happened One Night (1934, Romantic Comedy)

Starring: Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert

I never can get tired of watching this movie! No matter how many times I see it! I am indebted to my sister, Kelly, for explaining what walls of Jericho were. You see, my eyesight is getting weaker with every passing day, so I could not see the walls of Jericho. I just assumed that it was some vague metaphor  for the obstacles separating these two characters from developing any type of relationship. Kelly was kind enough to inform me that the wall was an actual blanket draped  over a rope for privacy when they were sharing a  bedroom. There are several references to these walls throughout this movie. I did some research on Joshua's story concerning the walls of Jericho. I found it very enlightening, and to nderstand the references to Joshua in the Talmage book I am currently reading.

Even though the main actors did not want to work on this project, they should be very proud of their work. Clark Gable had no desire to move to Columbia Pictures, especially since MGM was such a great company to work for. Luckily, he made the transition, which resulted in his only Oscar. When he died, Steven Speilberg anonymously bought the prized trophy which was appropriately returned by the Academy. Likewise, Claudette Colbert did not want to be involved with this picture. She had already done three films in 1934, and was ready for a much-needed vacation. Fortunately, she decided to do the project, and earned an Oscar for Best Actress. It was speculated that she won this statuette because of extensive work on the other blockbuster hits that she had made that that year. She had one busy year! But this film poplarized everyone involved with this motion picture. Frank Capra received a Best Directing Oscar, and Robert Riskin won for his adaptation of Samuel Hopkins Adams story. This film achieved immense success. Phenomenal movie! :-)
