Grand Hotel (1932)

Starring: Greta Garbo, John Barrymore, and Joan Crawford

Winning the Oscar for Best Picture in 1932, Grand Hotel was a memorable picture with a star-studded cast. Garbo plays Grusinskaya, a Russian prima ballerina losing her popularity and appeal. Ironically, Garbo is also losing her popular momentum as an actress. Garbo falls in love with a hotel thief, Felix von Geigern, or does she really fall in love with this criminal? Is she just so lonely that she surrenders herself voluntarily to any man that will have her for the sake of that money? And only if that criminal would get his hands on a large sum of money, then these two lovers could be happy, and live together happily ever after! Is there something wrong with this scenario? Is this movie a farce, attending to show those ridiculous, money-grubbing celebrities and the destruction created by their greed. Good movie! Joan Crawford played the ditzy Secretary to a tee. And of course, John Barrymore was not who Greta Garbo wanted playing Felix. She wanted her ex to play the Baron, probably because the role called for so many romantic scenes between the couple. :-)
