Billy Rose's Jumbo (1962, Musical)

Starring: Doris Day, Stephen Boyd, Jimmy Durante and Martha Raye. Director: Charles Walters. Original music: Richard Rogers, Roger Edens and George E, Stoll

This is a wonderful movie! Grant it, the musical numbers aren't anything to rave about! Thank goodness Richard Rogers teamed up with a marvelous lyricist, Oscar Hammerstein because the lyrics from his earlier collaborator were quite corny! However, I still love a few of the songs in his movie, particularly "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World", which was reprised throughout the movie. These reprises made the movie memorable. The melody was replayed repeatedly in my mind even after the movie was over.

Doris Day is sensational, and she is gorgeous. She has a lovely figure, and the following scene is hilarious as she falls into a pile of mud to the delight of her hot friend, played by Stephen Boyd:

Sam Rowlins: The most beautiful star in the world isn't Juno, isn't Venus , but between us, she can make me believe it's a beautiful world. Social, not a bit. Natural kind of wit. Words could not express how she looks in a frilly pink dress. The most beautiful house in the world has a mortgage, what do I care, it's goodbye care, when my slippers are next to the ones that belong to the one and only beautiful girl in the world.

Stephen Boyd is sooo good-looking, and I never knew he could sing! It's certainly is a different role from his Ben Hur character! The supporting cast is also great! Jimmy Durante and Martha Raye provide the constant comic relief. I love Jimmy Durante's reprise of "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" :

Pop Wonder: The most lovable lass in the world is bewitching and beguiling when she's smiling, she can make you believe it's a beautiful world. Wisdom, not so hot, culture she ain't got. Who needs an I.Q. just to whisper them two words, "I do." The most beautiful bride in the world leaves me speechless, what do I care, it's goodbye care. When we walk down the aisle and the girl by my side is the one and only beautiful girl in the world.

This movie is pretty hokey. You can watch this movie, and never go to a circus and be satisfied that you've seen plenty of circus acts. Yet, a must-see for Doris Day fans! Okay movie! :-)
