Top Pick, Given an A+ by Nicole Kent
Starring: Paul Scofield
Earning his well-deserved Oscar for Best Actor, Scofield's brilliant portrayal of the valiant Thomas More made this movie one of my favorite movies of all time. It is no wonder that Scofield had been playing this role on Broadway for several years! He is amazing, and I just love the story of this wonderfully courageous man, Thomas More, who is willing to sacrifice everything he has for what he believes to be the truth. This inspirational story should be a Classic shown on television repeatedly. Great monologues, exceptional acting. Thomas More was a great politician, and knew exactly what he should say and what he shouldn't say. I enjoyed the courtroom scene, but this is perhaps the lawyer side in me.
I remember A Man for All Seasons playing at BYU as a play. I remember how my English Professor recommended our class to go watch it, but I unfortunately did not listen to his advice. I regret my hasty actions now -- I wish I would have made the time to attend this marvelous performance of an outstanding theatrical production. But, even knowing this, I still enjoyed the movie. I did some research on the Internet about Thomas More, and found all of the political articles he wrote, including his Utopia. His final words before his execution are extremely powerful: "I was the King's good subject, but God's first." Phenomenal movie! :-)
