Cry the Beloved Country (1995, Drama)

Rev. Stephen Kumalo, James Jarvis,Theophilus Msimangu

Well, I preferred the novel. Surprise, surprise! There were so many details that the book covered, which the movie neglected to mention. Most importantly, the film neglected the details of the whites having compassion for the blacks, and showing their support by sharing rides with the blacks boycotting the bus. The whites wanted to show their support for this boycott, so they would offer random rides to blacks walking their long commute to work. James Jarvis and his wife (white) donate bottles of milk to nourish growing African children. There are some very touching scenes that have been eliminated from this production. Why? I believe to emphasize the liberal agenda: whites bad, blacks good. Furthermore, the evil whites continually have oppressed the blacks. Therefore, the whites are the direct cause of the African problems. I don't buy this theory, which is probably why I did not like this movie. However, I still recommend the novel. It is a moving tale of forgiveness and compassionate service.

There was one very inspirational scene in the movie to me on a personal level because it reminded me of the doctrine, which teaches us to trust in the Lord:

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me.(Psalms 23;1-4)

This final line had me in tears. No wonder it is such a widely-quoted scripture. All right movie! :-)
