written by James Jones, this movie was destined to be remembered for all eternity. This film became Fred Zinnemann's greatest picture. He envisioned Burt Lancaster playing the Sergeant, but the other stars were not his original picks. In fact, Frank Sinatra had to beg for the supporting role as the drunken boxer, who gets killed in the movie, but we do not really care because he is a weasel! Furthermore, he was stabbed by the hero, Robert E. Lee Pruid, played by the foxy Montgomery Clift. This movie sort of made me think of 9/11, at lease the bombing of Pearl Harbor scenes and the outrage fet by the Army. "Who do they [Japan] think they are? They're only messing with the world's greatest armed force." This emotion could have been stated right after 9/11: "Who does Al Queda think they are?" This movie was nominated for six Oscars, but only took one statuette home for Best Directing. Yes, Fred Zinnemann had created his satire on the Hollywood's favorite topic, the evils of war. What do you think? Or am I being way too analytical? Good movie! :-)
