Starring: Loretta Young, Joseph Cotten, Ethel Barrymore, and Charles Bickford. Director: H.C. Potter
Origianally entitled Katie for Congress, this classic movie became an Oscar-winning upset because nobody believed that Loretta Young had any chance of taking home the statuette for Best Actress. She absolutely astonished everyone when she collected the trophy for the role that had been declined by Ingrid Bergman. Bergman decided not to take the role of a Swedish maid, because after all, she was Swedish, so where would the challenge be? I think, Bergman regretted her hasty decision when Loretta Young claimed her prize. Young is marvelous, and plays this romantic role with Joseph Cotten. The pair is delightfully funny as they go skating. Don't you just miss the days when politicians were just as sweet and innocent and trusting as Loretta Young was? :-)
