Starring: Catherine Hepburn and Douglas Montgomery. Director: George Cukor. Based on the novel by: Louisa M. Alcott. Screenwriters were Sarah Y. Mason and Victor Heerman.
George Cukor and Catherine Hepburn made a great team! Hepburn and Cukor loved working together, and their pictures were becoming quite legendary. Hepburn astounds us with her performance as Josephine March. She is delightful, and deserved the Oscar for that year, but sometimes the Academy can be so stupid! I loved the scenes with Douglas Montgomery, and found myself comparing their romance with the Anne of Green Gables movie romance. I think the screenwriter for the Anne of Green Gables movie might have taken a few ideas from The Little Women dialogue.. Really, the proposal scene, the scene where Lori tells Jo his "secret", and even the fainting scene with Amy, the reluctant actress. My sisters still do not like the fact that Jo does not end up with Lori in the end. I can understand this. They were too different. Lori needed a sophisticated wife to entertain his ritzy friends. He needed someone to have on display rather than a writer always consumed with her stories. The ending to Little Women turns out perfectly, despite what Krissy thinks.
The scene where Jo is crying because her mother is not there to be with her sick sister has to be my favorite scene! Jo is sobbing uncontrollably, and hugging Lori. Then, she " flies" at Lori when he tells her the good news. Of course, she apologizes for her tragic behavior. Lori's quick response is priceless. "Fly at me all you want. I rather like it." This is a great line. The screenwriters, Sarah Y. Mason and Victor Heerman won an Oscar for their writing, rightly so! Phenomenal movie! :-)
