Shop Around the Corner, The (1940, Romantic Comedy)

Starring: James Stewart, Margaret Sullivan, Frank Morgan, and William Tracy. Based on the play by: Miklós László. Director: Ernst Lubitsch.

Budapest is the setting for this hilarious romantic comedy that was remade into You've Got Mail with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan -- both are must-sees for anyone who loves comedies!

The cast is splendid! Margaret Sullivan and James Stewart were old college chums where they both joined the University Players and developed their good acting rapport, which is evident in the following interchange:

Alfred Kralik: There might be a lot we don't know about each other. You know, people seldom go to the trouble of scratching the surface of things to find the inner truth.

Klara Novak : Well I really wouldn't care to scratch your surface, Mr. Kralik, because I know exactly what I'd find. Instead of a heart, a hand-bag. Instead of a soul, a suitcase. And instead of an intellect, a cigarette lighter... which doesn't work."

The chemistry they have together is remarkable.

The supporting cast is sensational also! Frank Morgan plays the boss of Matuschek and Company very well, but it is William Tracy who stands supreme as the witty "errand boy," Pepi. Tracy almost steals the show with his quick biting sarcasm. Great acting! Phenomenal story! Extraordinary movie! :-
